Burger (patty) a la Jamie Oliver

This version of homemade burger is one of our little family’s favorites. I got the recipe from Jamie Oliver’s website. So far I got no complain from my husband and the kids, thus its a good sign and quite a proof that this patty is kid’s friendly 🙂

For those who want to make it at home as well, you can check directly on the website (click here), or check my own (simpler) version of the recipe here below.

Burger Patty a la Jamie Oliver

  • 300-400 gr minced beef
  • half of large/medium size onion (or red onion) or one piece of onion if it’s not that big, peeled, chopped and then sauted with a bit of olive oil until softened and fragranced, cool it down
  • 1 pc egg (preferably size L)
  • 3-4 handful of breadcrumbs
  • 1 handful of (freshly) grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of ground black pepper (we put the pepper quite a lot since both of the kids really like pepper taste :))

To serve the burger:

  • Italian buns if available (or regular large burger buns)
  • Salad leaves
  • Sliced cheese (cheddar or any other cheese you like)
  • Gherkin/Pickled cucumber
  • Cucumber
  • Tomato
  • Mayonaise
  • Ketchup
  • Chilli sauce

Mix all the burger patty ingredients (including the cooled down sauted onion) in a bowl. Mixed them really well with your hands. If you think the burger mix is still too wet (or soft), you can add a bit more of breadcrumbs (don’t add too much, otherwise the patty will become too dry). Then divide the mixture into approximately 6-8 equal balls for burgers.

Wet your hands and roll the balls into burger-shaped patties about 2 cm thick (or any size you like :)). Place your burgers on the oiled baking tray and pat with a little olive oil. Cover them with cling film and put the tray into the fridge for at least an hour, or until the patties firm up (I usually just leave them for a while – around half an hour is also ok). If you want to cook the patty on a grill or oven, don’t forget to preheat them first (when you start doing the mix).

If using a frying pan (or griddle pan), put it on a high heat now and let it get really hot. Add a bit of olive oil and then throw the burger patty into the pan. According to Jamie, however you decide to cook your burgers, they’ll want around 3 or 4 minutes per side – you may have to cook them in batches if your pan isn’t big enough. When the burgers are cooked to your liking and it’s all looking really good, take them out from the pan.

In between the time, if you are using the half-baked (italian) buns like we do here (it’s much nicer than the ready-to-eat buns btw :p), while you cook the patty you can start to bake the buns in the oven (in accordance to the instruction on its package – usually will take around 8-10 minutes).

After the buns are nicely baked, halve them and then add all the complimentary items as many as you like. Don’t forget to put your burger patty, and now your homemade burger is ready to serve 😉
